A shift in governance may be a blessing in disguise for Travis Tritt fans, according to the musician himself.

This week saw the news of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation from the country’s top job – a position he has held since 2015. The leader of Canada’s centre-left Liberal Party, Trudeau’s progressive policies have long been odds with his critics both in Canada and the neighbouring USA.

Country musician Travis Tritt – who is a supporter of the American Republican Party – took the news of Trudeau’s resignation to share an update about his potential future touring plans, explaining he may be able to play shows in the country once more.

“Trudeau’s resignation announcement is welcome news,” he wrote on social media. “Depending on who replaces him, I might be able to agree to play shows in Canada again.”

Currently, it’s been almost six years since Tritt performed in Canada, last playing there for the Big Sky Music Festival in July 2019 – two years on from his previous visit it March 2017. Tritt was formerly a frequent visitor to the country, with numerous dates taking place annually until he performed in Nova Scotia on November 1st, 2015 – three days before Trudeau took office.

Though he hasn’t issued any formal statement in regards to his decision to ostensibly boycott the country due to Trudeau’s politics, Tritt has however been vocal in his opposition of those who can be seen to infringing upon his beliefs.

In 2021, Tritt announced he wouldn’t perform at venues that require proof of COVID vaccination, mask mandates or testing – cancelling four dates in the process.

“I’m putting my money where my mouth is and announcing that any venue or promoter mandating masks, requiring vaccinations, or pushing COVID testing protocols on my fans will not be tolerated,” he said at the time.

“Any show I have booked that discriminates against concert-goers by requiring proof of vaccination, a COVID test, or a mask is being cancelled immediately.”

It currently remains to be seen whether Tritt will indeed return to Canadian stages, though the upcoming election – which is likely to take place in the coming months – will provide a clearer indication.
