Blake Shelton confirmed on Instagram today (11 December) that he will co-produce the first-ever documentary about country music legend Keith Whitley.

Shelton’s Lucky Horseshoe Productions has teamed up with Anomaly Content & Entertainment (ACE) for the project.

“Keith Whitley released only three albums during his life, but his music has influenced generations of country music artists,” Shelton said of the inspiration behind making the documentary. “I’m proud and honored we get to bring his incredible story to film.”

He continued, “The documentary will feature extensive archival footage from the Country Music Hall of Fame and personal collections from [Whitley’s wife] Lorrie Morgan, providing a rich tapestry of Whitley's life and career.

“It will also explore the small town of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, where Keith grew up, and include reflections from Lorrie as she navigates her own career while honoring his memory.”

ACE Partner and Producer Evan Hayes said he was drawn to the project thanks to the idea of “tapping into a pop culture story that lies slightly beneath the surface,” per iHeartCountry.

Hayes added, “Here is this guy who is so important in the country music world - he inspired the modern Star Is Born, Morgan Wallen wrote a song about him and his music - and a lot of people don’t know his name. To be able to explore his character and this love story that had permeated pop culture in such an impactful way and introduce it to mainstream audiences is exciting.”

Keith Whitley was known for his hits Don’t Close Your Eyes, When You Say Nothing At All, and Miami, My Amy. The singer sadly passed away in May 1989 at age 34. His wife, Lorrie Morgan, paid tribute to him when he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022.

Stay tuned for more information about the project as it lands.

The news that Shelton will co-produce the Keith Whitley documentary comes just weeks after he released his latest single, Texas.

A song that calls back to the music of George Strait, Shelton said about the single, “The thing that struck me about ‘Texas’ immediately was how different it sounded for me, and I’m always looking to push myself. I think there’s something really special about this record and important for me.

“This is the perfect opportunity to come back with something so different, and it easily felt like it should be the first single. It’s connected with what I’ve done but moves forward at the same time, and it’s the perfect start to the next chapter of my career.”

Shelton recently topped the charts in the US thanks to his collaboration with Post Malone, Pour Me A Drink.
