16-year-old Beau Shearer stole the hearts of Australians last night (20 August) with his effortless cover of a modern-day country classic.
Performing Something In The Orange by Zach Bryan, Shearer shocked the coaches of this year’s season of The Voice Australia – longstanding coach Guy Sebastian and three newbies: fellow Australian singer Kate Miller-Heidke and two international stars, Adam Lambert and LeAnn Rimes.
Shearer shocked the coaches thanks to his voice—a voice beyond his years. Although his cover closely resembled the original, the young singer still delivered his style onto a song the world knows very well.
Shearer, a self-proclaimed “country/folk/blues” singer, received a four-chair turn on The Voice Australia, with Lambert commenting that he sounded “seasoned and pro” and Miller-Heidke taking off the gloves, saying there was “something so Australian” about Shearer, quipping: “I think it would be a mistake to go with an American [coach].”
Shearer ended up choosing Guy Sebastian – you can watch his audition below.
Following his live TV audition, Shearer posted on Instagram alongside a new photo of himself on The Voice: “Wow! That was fun…. I was not expecting that. Thanks to the judges for turning round!!!!! I am so excited to see what’s next!”

While Shearer has shared covers of songs by Sam Cooke, The Neighbourhood, James Blunt, Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, and more, he’s also a budding singer-songwriter, sharing original music on his Instagram.
Last year was a decent year for country music on The Voice Australia, with Mackay-based singer Bella Mackenzie making it to the semi-finals.
Mackenzie found her place on the 2023 season of The Voice Australia by auditioning with her rendition of Taylor Swift’s Anti-Hero. Her audition caught the attention of all four judges on the show – Guy Sebastian, Rita Ora, Jessica Mauboy and Jason Derulo – and she chose Sebastian as her coach.
She was the sole country singer to make it to the semi-finals after Dan Daniels, a Cohuna-based singer, and icons of the genre, The Bushwackers, were eliminated earlier in the season.
Earlier this year, Mackenzie inked a deal with Island Records Australia, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. She made her Island debut with the single COWBOY in June.
