Our Song of the Day is Drowning Myself by Golden-Guitar nominated country-pop singer-songwriter, Hayley Marsten. Co-written with Kieran Stevenson (and featuring backing vocals by Imogen Clark), the single came out of the darkest period in her life, which led to 10 months of therapy.

Hayley says, “This song is about being in the deep-end and pushing yourself deeper and deeper. I wrote it in that deep water, but I feel like I’m releasing it in a much safer place. This is the most of me I’ve ever put in a song, a departure for me both stylistically and in subject. I loved writing sad songs about the breakdown of my relationships but writing about the deterioration of my own mental health seemed like a mountain I just couldn’t climb.”

Hayley’s 2019 crowdfunded debut album, Spectacular Heartbreak, was streamed over 100,000 times in its first week of release and was nominated for ‘Alt-Country Album Of The Year’ at the Golden Guitars. The album features the singles, Red Wine, White Dress, Pretty and Wendy. The latter, which was nominated for ‘Country Song of the Year’ at The Queensland Music Awards.

Hayley’s first EP, Even was released in 2015. That same year, she was announced as one of ten finalists for the 2016 Toyota Star Maker competition. Her 2017 follow-up EP, Lonestar debuted at #8 on the ARIA Country Charts. She later released a four-track EP titled Spectacular in mid-2021, featuring four songs from her debut album, re-imagined on piano.
