American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan may have dominated the pop music landscape over the last year, but now it seems she’s about to try her hand at country.

In November, the Pink Pony Club singer made her Saturday Night Live debut, performing her smash hit, Good Luck, Babe! and a new song, which she eventually revealed was called The Giver.

Roan’s fans have waited for the official release of The Giver ever since. They’re in luck: Roan has announced that the song will be released on Thursday, 13 March, at 8 pm ET.

The Giver sees Roan emulate the early work of Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood. A backing band plays violin, guitar, and drums as her vocals soar. The melody and sound are undoubtedly country, but with something different: Roan effortlessly puts a cheeky spin on country music.

Roan has since shared with fans that country music has a special place in her heart. While she doesn’t plan to steal the spotlight from the “classic country divas,” Roan is here to “twirl and do a little gay yodel” for her fans. Here’s what she had to say about The Giver:

Dan Nigro and I wrote this together and it was so fun!!! We’ve never done a country song and I have such a special place in my heart for country music. I grew up listening to it every morning and afternoon on my school bus and had it swirling around me at bon fires, grocery stores and karaoke bars.

Many people have asked if this means I’m making a country album??? My answer is.. hmm right now I’m just making songs that make me feel happy and fun and The Giver is my take on c**try xoxo may the classic country divas lead their genre, I am just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for yall.

The impending release of The Giver arrives after Roan appeared at Elton John’s annual Oscars party. She sang a handful of her hits, teamed up with Elton John for Pink Pony Club, the pair performed Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me together, and Roan sang Your Song, dedicating it to her parents, who introduced her to John’s music.

Last month, Roan won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and made headlines with her acceptance speech, calling on record labels to look after their artists and offer “a liveable wage and healthcare.” A week before receiving the honour, she was crowned the winner of the 2024 triple j Hottest 100 with Good Luck, Babe!
