Texas tornado and certified bad boy, Koe Wetzel, is heading to Australia to kick off his The Night Champion World Tour.

The tour comes just one year after Wetzel visited to perform at CMC Rocks QLD, but when he spoke with Countrytown, it was clear he is bringing more than just new music back to our shores.

Welcoming his daughter last year, Wetzel seems reflective in his approach to music, hinting that his new music is a deeper collection from what we have seen in the past, and there is even more new music after that, which is more vulnerable still.

“I’m excited to talk about this part of my life,” Wetzel explains. “I’ve always said from the very beginning that I want my fans to grow with me. I don't feel like they can expect me to be 33 years old and still act like I’m a college kid. You know, I just don’t see any point in that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to write and play my party and college drinking songs, and I think that will always be there.”

He adds, “This new record was done before I slowed it down a little bit, and so you’re not going to hear a lot of where I’m at now, headspace-wise. It’s still got that edginess and a run-off from Nine Lives. It’s still me deep-diving a little bit more and being more vulnerable. I’m excited for this chain of music coming after this record and to see where this journey is headed.”

Wetzel’s new track, Time Goes On, is a perfect example of this personal growth. The song is deeply reflective, communicating that the passage of time is inevitable and you can choose to embrace the change or go against it.

The rising star has never ascribed to one thing or one genre, with his music a collision of country, rock, hip-hop and grunge. This fluidity with which he can mix and melt genres and his commitment to bringing his fans on the journey are why Wetzel always stays relevant and high on playlist rotations. He says his love of many genres is a reflection of what he and his band grew up listening to, rather than a conscious decision.

“If you've been a fan from the beginning, or if you're a new fan, it's just kind of got all these different sounds from kind of the past six records that I put out,” he says. “And so Time Goes On is kind of one of those that captured everything from the beginning to where I'm at right now.

“I feel like in the last couple of records, we've kind of transitioned a little more into the mainstream kind of side of country, I guess you'd say. But we still have that kind of signature. We call it ‘Texas Rock and Roll.’ It's just kind of a blend between Southern rock and country music, a little bit. So, you know, we've been kind of making this sound for a while, and we're just happy that people are still messing with it.”

With seven albums under his belt, Wetzel said it could probably be easier as he goes, but he likes to be challenged, create things he has not done or heard before, and tries to keep the process as free and unrestrained as possible. With 4.2 billion streams clocked, Wetzel could be on to something, and getting opportunities to tour with Morgan Wallen and HARDY has only bolstered his reach.

The fans who have stuck with him from day one would have revelled in those noisy, fun, and boisterous hits, helping him grow into the artist he is today, who does not miss.

“We are blessed. Looking back to where we started and where we are now… We’re just a bunch of road dogs. We’re a bunch of Texas drunks,” he shares.

Former rugby player, Billy Vincent, has just signed on to be the support for all Australian shows of the tour. With the viral newcomer proving he has as much talent as marketability, it’s a great choice to complement Wetzel's equally laid-back sound and vibe.

“We played CMC last year, and you know, it's been in the back of our minds ever since we left. We've been counting down the days. We can't wait to get back down under. We're gonna bring a lot of Texas with us. So we're excited just to get over there and bring y'all some rowdy Texas country music.”
