Randy Houser recently completed his scenes in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film, Killers of the Flower Moon. The western crime thriller stars Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone and Jesse Plemons and is due for release in Australia on October 19.
Based on David Grann’s broadly lauded best-selling book, Killers of the Flower Moon is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
According to IMDB, Houser plays Scott Mathis – the guardian over the estate of the main family, like an attorney, who also owns a general store. The film also stars fellow country music artists Jason Isbell as Bill Smith and Sturgill Simpson as Henry Grammer.
According to Houser, he was in his trailer waiting to film his first scene when he was told that they wouldn’t be able to film his scene that day. But “Marty” (as he calls Scorsese) wanted to see him, so they took him to set to watch the filming, where he realised why his scene was being pushed back.
“I go and mind you, now, I'm scared shitless. I’m like, ‘man, what the hell is going on here?’” Houser told Tracy Lawrence on TL’s Road House podcast. “I go to set, and I realise why we're not gonna get to shoot that scene that I was supposed to shoot that day and I'd been up all night studying.
“So, I go to set and after I talk to Marty, I'm watching this scene go down and I'm watching this guy shoot this piece of a scene and it was nobody we’d know, and it was taking him entirely too long... it was like it take 26 or something like that and you could feel in the room that it was getting a little, ‘okay, we're spending a lot of money on this shit.’

“It was getting a little hairy in there and I could feel it and you could see that everybody's getting a little bit aggravated, and I was like, ‘dear God, don't let that be me tomorrow.'"
He continued, “So, I watched that go down, and I’m up that night freaking out. [The next morning] I get there early, and my first scene was with Leonardo DiCaprio… They shoot it from everybody else's angle before they get to me because I'm the newbie, so we get in there and the third time I remember there was a fly that goes on the table and Marty yells, ‘Action!’ and all of a sudden Leo comes over the table and, whop! Kills a fly on the desk with his hand. And I’m like, that wasn’t in the script…
“The fourth time [Marty] comes out and says, ‘Okay, Randy, we got it.’ And I was like freaked out. I was like, ‘We do?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, we got it, that’s great.’ And I was like, ‘I wouldn’t know.’ And Leo looks across the table from me and goes, ‘What do you mean you wouldn’t know?’ I was like, “I wouldn’t know, I’ve never done this.’ And he said, ‘Well, you’d never know.”
