Warragul local Ethan Calway has officially made his mark on The Voice Australia, closing out the latest episode with a performance that had all four coaches reaching for their buttons, but it was Richard Marx that scored him in the end.

The 26-year-old carpenter and country artist, who performs in a local pub band with his three brothers, brought a grounded and soulful take on Marc Cohn’s Walking in Memphis that immediately resonated in the room. Accompanied only by his guitar, Calway’s effortless delivery and warm vocal tone had the coaches hooked from the first verse.

“You’ve got that Luke Combs thing,” said Marx, who went one step further and played his Ultimate Block, locking out the other coaches and securing Calway for his team. “You can probably sing any kind of country.”

Fellow coach Kate Miller-Heidke praised his musicality “What I loved about that was how effortless it was. It’s like the guitar and your voice are just an extension of you.”

Melanie C was equally charmed: “You’ve really put me at ease, which is such a lovely place to be.”

Even Ronan Keating made a pitch for Calway, sharing his history with country music and even the little known fact that he has written a #1 song in the USA for country megastars Brooks and Dunn.

For Calway, it’s a breakthrough moment on a national stage and he now joins fellow Toyota Star Maker finalist Cait Jamieson on Team Marx, making the country contingent one to watch this season.

With the full support of Australian country music fans behind him, he’s well placed to bring his laid-back storytelling and raw talent to an even bigger audience and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes him.
