Dylan Wright Is Finding His Way, One Song At A Time

14 July 2025 | 10:57 am | Megan Hopkins

“15 years of grinding, playing shows to no one, doing the TV thing and now it’s happening. There’s definitely some imposter syndrome in there, but also just enjoying every show we get to play.”

If Dylan Wright sounds a little more optimistic these days, it’s because he is. His new single Find My Way lands like a deep breath - uplifting, grounded and full of perspective. It’s a song that threads together the wanderlust of touring, the quiet strength of faith, and the heart-pull of home.

“We did three days of writing, and it was kind of just like jamming, talking about stories, talking about touring, talking about life,” Wright says, recalling the session with Sarah Buckley, Lachlan Bostock (of Mansionair), and longtime collaborator Andrew Grant. “Everyone's little stories kind of intertwined. So it wasn't just like one story, but it was all of ours.”

From that creative melting pot, Find My Way emerged. But unlike some of Wright’s more melancholic releases, this one is noticeably lighter, even hopeful. That shift in tone was intentional.

“A lot of my songs have been a bit down in the dumps,” he admits with a laugh. “And I'm like, let's get some knee slaps happening here.”

That newfound optimism doesn’t mean Wright’s abandoned the emotional depth that’s long defined his songwriting. If anything, it’s evolved. With Find My Way, he’s struck a balance between personal reflection and a message that resonates beyond his own experience, a balancing act rooted in his own growth, both spiritual and personal.

“When you are away and on tour and everything’s just a bit hectic, you think back to home and how amazing it is,” he says. “And with coming back to my faith over the past couple of years, it's kind of grounded me, given me more purpose and love for myself, which I disregarded for a while there.”

That grounding presence of home, the sun-drenched beaches, the good coffee, the slower pace of life, is never far from Wright’s mind, especially after long stints abroad. The song subtly speaks to that yearning, not just for a place, but for peace.

As Wright reflects on his songwriting process, it’s clear that the full impact doesn’t always arrive on day one. “Sometimes I write a song and I don’t really know what it’s about in the moment,” he says. “Then a few months later I’m like, okay, I get it. Everything has a plan. You're kind of just walking this road toward it… finding your way, if you will.” he laughs.

The timing of the release feels especially apt. Wright’s just wrapped up a massive tour with Tina Arena, has played everywhere from CMA Fest in Nashville to multi-city European tour with a side project of his, breathe., and now he’s heading straight into the Fresh Country Festival with Lane Pittman, Max Jackson and The Wet Whistles

It’s a lineup of some of the brightest emerging names in Aussie country and also, apparently, a recipe for some serious backstage mischief. “I'm nervous because I think Lane can be pretty cheeky,” Wright jokes. Not one to shy away from a challenge, he adds  “I mean, I do love a prank.” Let’s just say, stay tuned.

Behind the scenes though, life on the road is less glamorous than the grid might suggest. Wright is quick to keep things real.

“It affects you mentally. You're always on the go, trying to figure out something that's gone wrong,” he says. “I know I can make it look amazing on social media, but there's always something going wrong. It's a constant juggle.”

Despite the chaos, Wright finds real joy in sharing the stage with fellow artists, especially as a new generation of country talent begins to make serious waves in Australia. “I reckon we’ll be jamming, maybe even writing songs on the road. The shows are going to be awesome. I’d be going along even if I wasn’t playing.”

He doesn’t see himself as the “old guard”, but there’s a definite glimmer of big brother energy.

“I don't feel fresh - thanks for calling me old,” he laughs. “But I think it's like, not a changing of the guard, but saying, hey, here's a new crop of country music. Come and see us, even if you've never heard of the names before.”

Wright isn’t shy about championing his tourmates either. “The Wet Whistles, Max, Lane, they're all on my playlist. Their songs are earworms, and I love everything coming out right now. I think it’s a chance for Australians to support live music from Australia.”

For someone with such major momentum including upcoming performances at Tamworth Country Music Festival and BIGSOUND, Wright still approaches his career with an endearing sense of awe.

“It's just a constant pinch-me moment, and a constant checking in on yourself, to remain humble and just down to earth, because it can just be taken away in an instant,” he says.

“I've waited my whole life, 15 years of grinding, playing shows to no one, doing the TV thing and now it’s happening. There’s definitely some imposter syndrome in there, but I still enjoy every show we get to play.”

And while Find My Way is the latest track to drop, there’s plenty more music on the horizon. As usual, Wright promises an eclectic blend.

“There’s a bluesy number, a more indie-rock one, and definitely more country,” he says. “I never try and write the same thing. It’s just whatever I’m listening to or whoever I’m writing with.”

He smiles, half-joking: “I like reggae. I don’t know if I’ll do reggae… but who knows? Secrets.”

When asked what he hopes people take away from Find My Way, Wright pauses. It’s clear the message means something deeply personal to him.

“I think the takeaway would be… it's just meant to be, and it'll happen in its own way,” he says. “But you will find your way in the end.”
