Dual Golden Guitar winner Ashleigh Dallas has dropped her latest single Couldn’t Keep Up, and we have your first look at its accompanying music video in this exclusive premiere!
Sudden deaths of friends and loved ones are behind the new single. In what is part of the process of grief and healing for Ashleigh, she wrote the ballad late one night which shines light on those we lost and how often we don’t feel satisfied with our goodbye – that often things are left unsaid.
She says, “You lose people, and you don’t get to say goodbye in the way you feel you wanted to, and this song is capturing those thoughts. It’s about knowing that they’re still out there, that they’re still with you even if you don’t feel you’ve had the chance to say goodbye.”
In the lead-up to the release of Couldn’t Keep Up, Ashleigh lost another friend, and said it was a reminder to savour every moment with our loved ones.

She adds, “I want to encourage people to not hold back, say the things you need to say at a heart level, and we need more of that out there. I think everyone will be able to relate in their own way because, even with technology, there are still illnesses and many goodbyes that we don’t get to say. This song is saying that unfortunately, sometimes the world just doesn’t keep up, we are still falling behind and letting statistics rise.”
In working within COVID-19 guidelines, Ashleigh and video director Jay Seeney worked together to create a lyric video, using footage from a trip to Mudgee that the pair hung out on.
She says, “We’ve still been able to collaborate, but we couldn’t shoot the clip in person and, while it was hard to get over the initial idea that it wasn’t going to be what we had planned, there is something special about it; When you watch it and see the lyrics, it really drives home the content of the lyrics.”
Ashleigh is third generation in a country music family dynasty. Born in Australia’s Country Music Capital of Tamworth NSW, the CMAA graduate grew up listening to the musical sounds of her family – Roll of Renown recipient and Golden Guitar winner, Rex Dallas and Golden Guitar winner, producer and multi-instrumentalist father, Brett Dallas. She began violin lessons at the age of 6, and learned to play acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and banjo and started songwriting when she reached her teenage years.
Her latest album Reflection was released in 2019, and followed 2015’s Otherside of Town and her award-winning 2017 album Lighthouse, which debuted at number two on the ARIA Country Charts just below Keith Urban. Since the age of 16, Ashleigh has been a proud ambassador for the music festival Tunes In The Tropics, held on Fiji’s Coral Coast. In the 10 years of the trip, Ashleigh has been a part of raising money for the local Fijian Community and local schools while sharing her songs to the festival goers and local families.
Couldn’t Keep Up and her previous single, Good & Bad Days – which we also premiered here – are from Ashleigh’s upcoming album, slated for release next year.
