Country artist Ella Langley has finally addressed the viral moment that reignited romance rumours between her and fellow country star Riley Green, and it turns out he noticed it too.

The incident in question? A now widely circulated video from a show in Wilmington, North Carolina, where a fan held up a sign that read Wink if Riley’s a dumb***”. Langley, never one to shy away from a cheeky moment, locked eyes with the sign and delivered a dramatic wink and smirk, instantly sending fans into speculation mode.

But according to Langley, it was all in good fun and she was very aware of how it might be received.

“Let me tell you, the next day he texted me that video,” she told Elaina Smith on Backstage Country. “He said, ‘Not the sweetest thing I’ve seen.’”

Langley laughed it off and offered a bit of behind-the-scenes context for the wink heard around the internet.

“I was like, okay, hear me out. This might not be believable to you, which he knows me, so I’m kind of a jokester. I tend to live on the dark side of humour, so whenever I answered that, I was just answering it as myself and not like as ‘Ella Langley.’ And I was just kind of answering the joke. Like, obviously it’s a very dramatic wink, and right when it happened, I saw all the phones up there and I was like ‘Oh my god, that’s going to be taken out of context and I’m going to get ripped a new one.’”

The singer said she even followed up with Green after the show: “I texted and I was like, ‘Hey, look, I would see that as playful and endearing personally.’ And I saw a lot of women on there saying that they’d say that about their husband, so I was like ‘See, it’s not that bad.’”

While fans have long speculated about a possible off-stage connection between the two, especially following the popularity of their duet You Look Like You Love Me both Langley and Green have repeatedly denied any romantic involvement. In a previous interview on the Viall Files podcast with Nick Viall, Green even joked, Ella’s probably too smart to date me anyway.

Langley’s response only reinforces what those close to the artists already know, they’re friends who enjoy giving each other a hard time. And while fans may want to believe in a real-life country love story, it looks like this moment was more about humour than heartbreak.

At the very least, it shows Langley’s wit is just as sharp as her songwriting and she’s more than happy to play along with the fans.
