Celebrating the achievements of talented songwriters and music publishers over the past year, the 2022 APRA Music Awards took place in Melbourne last night, with The Kid LAROI, Tones & I and more dominating across multiple categories

The 40th-anniversary edition of the awards, hosted by Julia Zemiro and Jerome Farah, saw 15 accolades given out, with global superstar The Kid LAROI claiming the coveted Songwriter Of The Year title alongside the Peer-Voted APRA Song Of The Year gong for Justin Bieber collab STAY as well as Most Performed Hip Hop/Rap Work for Without You.

“Thank you for awarding me with Songwriter Of The Year,” The Kid LAROI said. “I really appreciate the support and I want to give a quick shout out to fans back home. I’m stoked to be on my way back and I can’t wait to perform the END OF THE WORLD TOUR with you guys. I miss you all and I’ll see you soon.”

Tones & I’s multiple wins came in the form of Most Performed Pop Work for Fly Away and Most Performed Australian Work Overseas for Dance Monkey.

Making his APRA Music Awards debut, John Courtidis also picked up two awards for his work on Head & Heart by performed Joel Corry and MNEK, with the song he co-wrote claiming the Most Performed Australian Work and Most Performed Dance/Electronic Work.

Meanwhile, the highly anticipated Breakthrough Songwriter Of The Year title was bestowed to Genesis Owusu following an absolutely stellar run following the release of acclaimed 2021 album Smiling With No Teeth, which in recent months was awarded both the Australian Music Prize and saw the artist top the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition with single Gold Chains.

Other winners throughout the night included Amy Shark, Vance Joy, Angus & Malcolm Young, Budjerah and more, while The Wiggles accepted the Ted Albert Award For Outstanding Services To Australian Music, presented to them by music legend Ross Wilson.

“It was an absolute joy to celebrate the success and artistry of the Australian songwriters who have persevered and kept us entertained and connected over the last couple of challenging years,” APRA AMCOS Chief Executive Dean Ormston said.

“Congratulations to the winners, nominees and performers, who helped to create such a memorable night in honouring 40 years of the APRA Music Awards.”
