'The Way That You Walk' is directed at people (mainly men) who use their words to defer from their own deplorable actions.
Known for their searing brand of soulful blues that combines walloping Americana folk roots with moody rock revelations, Nick Carver & the Mean Street Butchers will release their simmering new single The Way That You Walk and accompanying music video on May 27... But for those who can't wait, we have your exclusive first look right here!
Following up their latest thundering cowboy-rock single, Two Legged Dog, the Melbourne-based band creep back ominously with the alt blues-folk track. Written and Performed by Nick Carver & the Mean St Butchers and recorded at The Aviary Studios in Melbourne, The Way That You Walk is directed at people (mainly men) who use their words to defer from their own deplorable actions.
Inspired by a dark role Nick was cast in for a local theatre production, the darkness in the video matches the song’s intention to denote gender equality issues.
Nick explains, “The song itself deals with men answering for themselves and each other, by simply owning their actions and answering for men as a collective. I came up with the chorus for the song during the “golden era” of the Trump presidency. In particular his “it’s a scary time to be a man” line. I found that particularly off-key. Like wtf?!? It seems like he, and men like him just make these ridiculous statements and then get defensive when people call them on it. Then there’s the whole #notallmen movement. Like a lot of my songs, I’ve kept the lyrics short and to the point. It conveys enough to carry great meaning for me, so I hope that carry’s on to whoever listens.”
The video, which was filmed by Liam Davidson from Lord Media, is simple yet compelling. It sees Nick walking in slow motion towards the camera, starkly lit from behind by imposing car headlights. He is joined briefly by two of his bandmates (Abbey Rose and Trudie Potter) as they continue to march ahead, while the car relentlessly continues to stalk them from behind.
Nick adds, "My original idea for the video was to have Trudie and Abbey walk me down an abandoned bush track, with an overall feeling of impending doom. Like they were walking me to my grave, to answer for my crimes. That was the overall feeling I was trying to convey."
