Rider Essentials: Piper Butcher

Newcastle singer-songwriter, Piper Butcher’s new single Read Between The Lines swirls with a modern alternative rock-indie vibe, whilst giving a nod to the country/Americana feels from her previous releases – Before The Thunder and Haunting Your Thoughts from her 2021 debut EP titled September, which peaked at #1 in the Alternative Album iTunes charts and #2 in the All Genre Album iTunes charts. 

Read Between The Lines is evidently the most vulnerable Piper has been with her music. After performing at Dashville Skyline in February with her band and debuting the song, to travelling to the Butchers Brew Bar in Sydney for a show supported by Great Southern Nights, Piper has now set out on her Read Between The Lines tour.

With Americana meets rock ’n’ roll influences from the likes of Lukas Nelson, Chris Stapleton and Stevie Nicks, the CMAA Academy of Country Music graduate has supported acts such as Diesel, Glenn Shorrock, Gretta Ziller, The Black Sorrows, Richard Clapton, Thirsty Merc, Melody Moko, Josh Pyke and Tori Forsyth, and played alongside Bill Chambers, Gina Jeffreys and Lyn Bowtell to name a few.

We caught up with Piper to find out the things she always takes on the road with her for this week’s Rider Essentials.

1. Extra Guitar Strings

I could not go anywhere without one, two or MORE packets of guitar strings. You can never guess what weather might creep up on you, and guitars can get pretty temperamental if you don’t look after them. Elixir strings are my favourite for my Maton acoustic. I always stock up before I travel... For anyone interested at home, I use 12-53 gauge!

2. Straws

Okay, so, I know how it sounds, but I love taking straws with me wherever I go because you never know which venues don’t have them!! I love getting dressed up, and makeup is something I am very passionate about, so I take pride in making sure I don’t have any spills, or rub marks from my lipstick by using straws. Presentation is everything!

3. Battery Pack

I use my phone to capture video and photo for social media, contacting music colleagues and online merch sales. Whether I’m on Instagram, Gmail or Google Drive, my phone is always in my hand! I go above and beyond to make sure I have reliable and correct information for every circumstance; I always like to have my battery pack charged up to ensure I’m able to be punctual with responses, BTS content and more!

4. Writing Material

Inspiration always comes at the most inconvenient times for me! A blessing and a curse! I always love to have a writing book on hand. I have two main ones that I toggle ideas between for writing songs – or at the LEAST one single napkin will do the job. Fun fact: I also write my solo set lists on napkins to make sure I feel the vibe of the room before I play to an audience.

5. Socks

As I said before, I love dressing up. But sometimes, I cannot handle staying in heels for the entire night. I always make sure I have an extra pair of socks in my car with some other shoes so I can be comfortable in every situation. I have an ever-growing sock collection – from McDonald’s, to zebras, to Hard Rock Café, Looney Tunes and more! This is one of my biggest passions! SOCKS!
