Bubbly, warm, and familiar are three words one would use to describe both Piper Rodrigues’ personality and music. Sitting down to chat with her about her upcoming EP, Lucky You!, feels like catching up with an old high school friend.

After chatting through optimal seating options in her hotel room, how the airline lost her luggage, and shopping at Mecca, we eventually get onto the subject of new music.

Though she’s been writing, performing, and releasing music on her own for years, Lucky You! marks Rodrigues’ first EP – a huge milestone in her career and the result of two years of writing. The lead single, Hold The Door (Wide Open) is a cheeky, fun track about cutting off toxic relationships.

“Not everything has to zero in on romantic relationships,” Rodrigues explains. “Hold The Door was about a friend – I think we’ve all been in those friendships where you’re putting in all the effort.

"Sometimes it’s fine, 'cause some things are 50-50, or 80-20, but when it’s 0-100 all the time and you feel a bit used, this is the time where you’re like, ‘You know what? I think it’s best you go… 'Instead of crying about it, I'm going to laugh about it."

Cutting off those relationships is something Rodrigues has gained the confidence to do over time, recognising when things aren’t serving her in the healthiest way.

She shares that this track is about a very specific person, who might not have even realised that they’ve parted ways due to being so self-absorbed.

Writing the song with her best friend and fellow country artist, Siobhan Cotchin, was a healing experience.

“We had all of the fuel ready, the whole thing was pretty autobiographical, we had a lot of fun,” she shares.

Hold The Door starts as a slow country song before building into this boot-scootin’, energetic, fun chorus that still addresses the subject matter seriously.

In terms of the sound of the overall EP, though, it is apparently the dark horse amongst the other tracks.  “It’s very different to anything else I’ve written before, but I think it still very much fits," she explains. "Once you listen to the EP, you’ll hear how it all marries together though.”

Approaching the EP, Rodrigues had just one desire: she wanted it to sound like her, which meant injecting her personality into each track.

So far, what we’ve heard is exactly that. In the early stages, every song begins as stripped-back as possible – usually just Rodrigues on a guitar, maybe a co-writer or two, before it begins to take a more solid shape.

Hold The Door changed dramatically from the first draft, when they made the decision to add a ‘sickly sweet bluegrass sound’ as Rodrigues describes it.

“I almost didn’t even put the line about natural selection in there.” She laughs. “But when it comes to the actual songs, I stopped worrying about what other people would think and I wanted to put the outrageous stuff in there because with the whole EP itself, the stories that come from it are kind of outrageous.”

The title track and next single, Lucky You! has one of these outrageous stories behind it. Without divulging too much information before its release, Rodrigues shares that she demoed the track four times because she kept trying to make it sound ‘too cool’ and found herself slowly veering away from what it should be, hiding from herself initially.

This resulted in something inauthentic, and required an internal pep talk to ground herself and bring things back to their roots again.

“I’m quite a cheeky person, it’s how I deal with things, it’s how I make sense of life and that’s further fuelled by writing songs," she explains. "Demoing out the songs could have made them go back to being a little more alternative, but I didn’t feel myself naturally pulled to that.”

Devil I Know, another track from the upcoming EP, was also written with Cotchin, when the two realised they were both watching True Blood at the same time.

If you’re unfamiliar, it’s one of those ‘so bad its good’ kind of shows, or as Rodrigues describes it, “It’s really corny, but I can’t look away – it’s like a car accident.”

The two had the best time writing this track, and when presented to her partner and co-producer, Jack, it was met with, ‘Oh no, what have you two been up to?’ – but it found its place on the EP and the fun they had while writing it nestled itself into the track.

That playful, silly side is what Rodrigues is all about. Lyrically and thematically there’s a depth to everything, too, but that playfulness is what makes it so palatable.

This has been Rodrigues’ entire approach when writing this EP. After sitting on these songs for around two years in various forms, she’s feeling nothing but excitement when it comes to sharing them with the world.

Absolutely beaming with joy and anticipation, she shares that for so long this felt like a dream, and it’s finally becoming a reality with the release of the EP. A real pinch-me moment came with recently recording the Lucky You! music video at a retro Airbnb in Melbourne.

“It’s like a '70s fever dream,” she laughs, “there was a leopard print living room and a bar with a disco floor… when we shot the video I was just like, ‘Oh my god, I’m doing it!’”

Lucky You! is due to be released on November 6th, with the title track dropping soon. To celebrate the release, Rodrigues is planning a small tour with a launch at The Outpost in Brisbane, before heading back to her hometown of Newcastle, and then visiting Tamworth and Melbourne for a string of intimate shows.

The debut EP is certainly the promising start of bigger things to come for Piper Rodrigues, with her warm, fun-loving side front and centre of this EP, right alongside her stunning vocal ability, clever songwriting and country charm.
