Thinking ‘Bout You by Dustin Lynch feat. MacKenzie Porter – Song of the Day

Our Song of the Day is Thinking ‘Bout You by American singer-songwriter Dustin Lynch featuring rising Canadian artist, MacKenzie Porter, who’s opened for the likes of Blake Shelton and Rascal Flatts.

Thinking ‘Bout You, co-written by Dustin, Andy Albert, Hunter Phelps, and Will Weatherly, tells the exciting and relatable tale of exes reconnecting via a phone conversation. The track was originally released as a duet with Lauren Alaina on Dustin’s 2020 studio album, Tullahoma.

Dustin says, “This is one of my favourite songs from Tullahoma, and I’m so excited we get to shine a light on it in a new way with MacKenzie. We chose her voice for this version when my team and I reached out to our country music community for submissions from up-and-coming female artists. Not wanting to be swayed by any other factors, we got a folder of numbered MP3s and just listened. It all pointed to MacKenzie. I fell in love with her tone – it was effortless and honest. Her voice is something that can’t be taught, it’s clear she was born with that talent. She was brilliant at bringing her uniqueness to this song, but also keeping it familiar for fans of the original.”

Directed by Justin Nolan Key, the music video sees the duo assuming the roles of a former couple reminiscing over the phone.

Dustin says, “Justin wanted to take it back to the Hitchcock days where you can tell it’s not real. It allowed us to make the video more of a memory and a flashback, rather than going back to the literal ‘let’s ride around a small town and go to the Circle K.’ We were able to jump and lighten it up a little bit, make it airier.”

He adds, “There’s something about memories. I think back on the memories this song is about. You remember all the good times. Even though the relationship didn’t work out, and who knows where that person is, you remember the highlights and high times. I think that’s what we captured in this video.”

Thinking 'Bout You is the fourth single to come off Tullahoma, followed by Momma's House as well as back-to-back chart-toppers Good Girl and Ridin' Roads. The album peaked at no. 6 on the Australian ARIA charts. Before that, Dustin released his self-titled debut album in 2012, Where It’s At (2014) and Current Mood (2017) as well as an EP, Ridin' Roads in 2019.

In 2020, MacKenzie became the first female artist to have three back-to-back number one singles at Canadian Country radio in 22 years with About You, These Days and Seeing Other People, following Shania Twain in 1998. She also co-starred in the Netflix series, Travelers. Her current single is the extremely catchy, Drinkin’ Songs.
