Independent singer-songwriter from the east coast of NSW, Aaron Jurd released his sixth single, Midnight Train last week. As he works towards his second EP, we’re honoured to be able to premiere the accompanying music video. It’s also our Song of the Day!
Midnight Train has elements of Jason Aldean, Devin Dawson and Blake Shelton throughout it, with a definite Nashville-type modern country sound. Self-penned, the song came about after the Lake Macquarie artist was strumming chords on his guitar.
Aaron says, “A melody started coming to my head and the words followed that. I didn’t know the direction of the song initially and didn’t know what I wanted to say, but the music started talking and I wrote what was coming into my head. I really found a direction for it once I wrote the first verse.”
The song tells the story of a girl who dislikes her job working in a bar, pouring drinks for truck drivers and working for people who don’t respect her.

Aaron adds, “One way that I can help her escape that is on a first date and make her forget about that work-related stress. This idea hadn’t been going through my head at all; I had a day where I just felt like sitting down and writing a song and whatever I was feeling came out in the song.”
The music video, shot by Eyes and Ears Creative’s Jeremy Minett, reflects the escaping reality theme of the song as Aaron and the girl working behind the bar head out on a date and a few drinks and was shot in locations in and around Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.
Last November, Aaron released his debut EP, Changed, which debuted at no. 5 on the iTunes Country Albums Chart. Furthermore, he graduated from The CMAA Academy, performed at the Official Opening Concert of the Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Golden Guitar Awards with O’Shea, all in 2018. He has also written songs with award-winning artists including Gina Jeffreys and Allan Caswell.
He was the recipient of the highly sought-after APRA AMCOS TSA ‘New Songwriter of the Year’ award in 2020. Aaron was also a finalist in the prestigious Tamworth Songwriters Association Awards and Australian Country Music People’s Choice Awards that same year.
