Anxiety—much like depression, its cruellest attendant—is, as Golden Guitar-winning two-piece The Weeping Willows know only too keenly, a roomful of ghosts. At its ghastliest, it is a formless creature given only to predation—a clawing horror that roosts in the timbers of the chest.

Mental health struggles of all kinds are, tragically, sufferings borne all too often in silence, lest we should contaminate our loved ones with their polluting influence. Scored by delicate acoustic fingerpicking, sombre bass and plaintive zephyrs of squeezebox, The Weeping Willows’ arresting new single Turning to Stone is a masterful reflection on the chill hand of mental illness that plagues so many among us.

Across the track, Laura and Andy’s exquisite vocal harmony traverses the gulf between twin hearts separated by loneliest anguish. In The Weeping Willows’ studied hands, it’s a painfully familiar space in which gilded smiles bely a shadowy inner life, once-warm flesh is petrified, and loving hearts are deranged by fear. Yet hope still chimes in the darkness. The message coursing through Turning to Stone is a vital one: a loving embrace and lighted path amidst the brambles are ever-ready for us to seize—if we can only open our hearts to receive them.

Turning to Stone is dedicated to the memory of a dear friend. The Weeping Willows hope the song serves as a reminder to everyone to reach out to others if they’re struggling and also to be alert to those around them, have a conversation if they identify signs of distress or difficulty and connect someone to appropriate support, long before they're in crisis.

All proceeds from the sale of this single on Bandcamp between 8/9/2022 (R U OK Day) and 10/10/2022 (World Mental Health Day) will be donated to ‘R U OK?’, a harm prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives. For more information on ‘R U OK?’, including conversation tips, please visit: www.ruok.org.au.
