The Smith & Western Jury Lean Into The Fear On ‘Lucky Stars’

Written during a period of serious health struggles, ‘Lucky Stars’ captures the fear of trying to hold it together while everything quietly falls apart.

The Smith & Western Jury aren’t pulling punches on their latest release.

Back with new single Lucky Stars, the Naarm/Melbourne outfit are stepping into darker territory, trading some of the signature style of their debut era for something far more raw, restless and emotionally heavy.

Following the success of their 2024 debut album Hotel Texas, the band’s latest track digs deep into fear, uncertainty and the strange disconnect that comes when your body suddenly stops feeling like your own. Built around gritty guitars and an infectious hook that refuses to leave your head, Lucky Stars balances vulnerability with the kind of stomping rock energy the band have quickly become known for.

Written during a period of significant health challenges, the song captures what it feels like to keep functioning while privately spiralling.

“I’ll be counting all my lucky stars if I make it through the night.”

That line sits at the emotional core of the track: part survival anthem, part exhausted confession.

Rather than dressing things up, Lucky Stars leans fully into the discomfort. It wrestles with uncertainty, disconnection and the reality of receiving life-altering news in ways that can often feel rushed or emotionally detached. There’s still plenty of grit and drive in the track, but underneath it all is a band clearly willing to show a more vulnerable side of themselves this time around.

It also marks another major step forward for a group that have been quietly building momentum across the Australian alt-country and rock scenes.

Forged in the backrooms and beer-soaked venues of Melbourne, The Smith & Western Jury have developed a reputation for chaotic, high-energy live shows that blur the line between country twang and full-throttle rock and roll.

On stage, they’ve already shared bills with names including Ella Hooper, Luca Brasi and Henry Wagons, while festival appearances at Out On The Weekend, Queenscliff, Tamworth and Meatstock have only added to the buzz surrounding the band.

Now, they’re gearing up for an even bigger chapter.

To celebrate the release, the band will hit the road across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania.
