Robert Smith, better known as The Duck, will take over as the new host of the Country Music Countdown on Australian radio.

Smith is stepping in to host the weekly program (every Saturday from 10 am—12 pm) after longtime host Ray Hadley recently announced his retirement from radio. Smith will host the show from next month (Saturday, 21 December).

It’s important to note that each week, the top 20 on the Country Music Countdown pulls from the chart you see on the Countrytown Hot 50. In addition to playing the hot hits, the show features its host spinning new tunes, interviewing emerging and big names, and live in-studio performances.

The Country Music Countdown airs on 2GB in Sydney, 4BC in Brisbane, and other network stations in Australia. It was born due to Hadley’s love for country music and his “unwavering support” of Australian artists making waves in the genre.

Smith currently hosts 2GB’s The Camping and Off Road Radio Show weekend program.

He said of the new hosting gig on social media yesterday (26 November):

I wasn’t going to say anything about this just yet, but I have received lots of messages today since my mate Ray Hadley mentioned this on the radio today. From December 21, I will host The Country Music Countdown on 2GB Sydney, 4BC Brisbane & Network Stations all over Australia.

To take on a show that’s been hosted by a legend in Australian radio is unbelievable to be honest. Anyone who knows me knows I love my country music. Thank you to those who have contacted me. I have huge boots to fill, that’s for sure.

Smith, who loves his country music, has been on the air offering something unique to listeners: playing iconic songs that fit with the camping and off-road theme, detailing popular camping spots, and offering bucket list destinations. The show has hosted expert guests such as Graham Cahill, Vic Widman, Steve Zammit, Mal Leyland, and Emma George.
