My Countrytown: Lucy Parle – Central Coast, NSW

The local country music scene is absolutely thriving at the moment, and Lucy Parle is clear proof of that. She made waves in 2021 as a favourite in triple j’s Unearthed High contest, later making waves at the International Songwriting Competition – and at 20 years old, she’s already shared stages with some of the biggest names in Australian music (such as Casey Barnes, Ash Grunwald and Mahalia Barnes).

Parle’s latest release is the infectious single Best Of Me, which arrived last month as a poignant reflection on the journey she’s been on since she launched her career. In a press release, she explained it’s about “not being happy with my life and where my music was heading, and the realisation that I had to make some major changes”.

The track itself has been some six years in the making. At age 14, Parle became a mentee of Aussie country legend Gina Jeffreys – they got along like a house on fire, and the young stalwart even made a lasting impression on Jeffreys’ husband, famed producer Rod McCormack. In his own statement, McCormack praised Parle as “an artist who I believe has the potential to be one of Australia’s and the world’s finest writers and performers”.

Parle and McCormack wrote Best Of Me together alongside Nashville firestarter Sam Gay, with McCormack also handling production. Parle said of the song’s recording process: “We had a live band in the studio, which included myself, Rod McCormack, Jeff McCormack and Glenn Wilson. The experience was a lot of fun and brought an authentic feel to the track.”

Best Of Me arrived alongside an eye-catching music video helmed by Duncan Toombs of The Filmery, shot in Sydney (Eora) on what Parle describes as “the most embarrassing day of my life”. She said of the experience: “[Toombs was shooting me walking through the city and on buses singing the song. There were lots of random people staring at me, probably thinking I was a crazy person.”

From here, Parle is excited to embark on a new chapter in her career, boldly stepping out as an independent artist. “I decided to leave my record label and publisher,” she said, “as they were pushing me in a direction I didn’t want to go [in].” Best Of Me is our first preview of the bold future Parle has ahead of her.

Best Of Both Worlds

The Central Coast is an awesome place to live! You get the best of both worlds with gorgeous beaches and also a beautiful scenic rural vibe. You can be lazing at the beach one minute and then just a ten-minute drive away, you can experience the picturesque country landscape with farms and vineyards.

There’s always lots going on at the beaches, like weekend markets at Terrigal and Avoca and there are also lots of amazing cafes, restaurants and local pubs. Plus, every June there is the Harvest Festival, held in the countryside of the Central Coast, where you can visit farms and buy locally grown fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants. There is also live music and markets to buy homemade goods and crafts. 

Lots Of Dog Walks!

The Central Coast is doggy heaven! My pup Charlie and I love our adventures at Strickland State Forest and North Avoca’s dog beach. Strickland is a blast with both short and long walks through beautiful rainforest scenery. As you climb higher, you get that Aussie outback vibe with towering gum trees. For dogs who are scared of the waves, like Charlie, North Avoca beach is perfect because it also has a calm lagoon for dogs to play and swim.

Whether it's lush forests or beachside strolls, the Central Coast is packed with awesome spots for unforgettable dog walks and playtime. Charlie and I can't get enough!

Moo To Ewe Animal Sanctuary

Just ten minutes from my home is the amazing Moo To Ewe animal sanctuary. I used to volunteer there, mucking out stalls, feeding cows, and even cleaning up cow poo – I did it all! This sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing a forever home for orphaned farm animals. It is a peaceful retreat for animals who have suffered neglect or abuse, ensuring they live out their lives in comfort and dignity.

The mission of Moo To Ewe is to change the perception of farmed animals by sharing their stories and advocating for their well being. They have guided tours where you can meet the animals and even enjoy cow cuddles, which is super cute!  It’s great having such an amazing place nearby – not only is it fun, but it’s also a great way to educate people about animal welfare. 

Terrigal By Night

Terrigal's nightlife on Friday and Saturday is the place to be. Start your evening with beachside cocktails at Florida Beach Bar, where the sunset and live acoustic music sets the stage for a great night. There is also the electric atmosphere at Rhonda’s Bar & Restaurant with craft cocktails and rooftop seating.

I love to boogie so you’ll find me busting a move on the dance floor at Mumbo Jumbo’s or Terrigal Beach House. And if you need some downtime from the loud music and crowded dance floors, head to Void for a relaxing vibe where you can sit back and play video games like Mario Kart with your friends! With its mix of coastal charm and vibrant venues, Terrigal’s nightlife promises endless fun! 

Sydney At A Stretch

Living on the Central Coast is like having a front-row seat to paradise while keeping Sydney’s excitement just a step away! It’s the ultimate blend of easygoing coastal vibes and city buzz. With the M1 zooming you straight to Sydney, then a breezy drive over the Harbour Bridge or through the City Tunnel, there’s no need to miss out on city life.

It’s the perfect blend of laid-back coastal life and urban adventure. And as a musician this is awesome cause I get to play gigs at trendy Sydney venues like Waywards in Newtown, Mary’s Underground at Circular Quay and the Golden Age Cinema in Surry Hills, yet still get to go home each night. I’ve even played at gig at Cockatoo Island in the middle of Sydney Harbour!
