Granger Smith Wraps Up Filming New Movie ‘Moonrise’

Granger Smith has been teasing his involvement “filming a movie” on social media since mid-January – and now, we finally have more details on the project.

According to IMDB, Smith plays a character called Will Brown in the TV movie drama, Moonrise. The plot synopsis reads: After country singer Will Brown's wife passes away, his grief sidelines his career and pushes him away from his young daughter until a bright and talented horse trainer shows him strength, forgiveness and grace to live life again.

The themes of the movie are close to Smith’s heart. In June 2019, the singer and his wife shared the news that their 3-year-old son, River, had drowned in the family’s backyard pool. His death prompted the parents to become advocates for swimming pool safety, and to establish the River Kelly Fund, which, according to the website was founded to “shine our light on those that provide support and bring awareness to causes including children in need, arts and education, wildlife preservation, military, veteran and first responder assistance, donor affiliations and many more organisations close to our hearts.”

When director and writer Vickie Bronaugh approached him with an offer to star in her forthcoming film, Moonrise, the singer jumped at the opportunity.

Smith wrote on social media, “I haven’t talked much about it, but this movie is finally finished filming. I spent about a month in Blanco, Texas with some incredibly talented actors and crew pouring a lot of hours and a completely different side of my creative brain into this character.”

He adds, “I remember getting this script back in November and I read the entire thing in one sitting on the porch swing. It’s special. I’ve never acted in this way, but I fell in love with the character and knew that I had to do it… or at least give it my best shot.”

Smith adds that the movie release date is still up in the air, but he’s been “writing like crazy” for the Moonrise soundtrack.
