Australian-born, Nashville-based country artist, Morgan Evans recently sat down with Billboard to share his favourite Aussie slang with their US audience.

“This is Morgan Evans, and this is my favourite Australian slang,” Evans states. “First one, I feel like I need to start with this: ‘Fair Dinkum.’ And it just means, like, the real deal. Like, if you were looking for some music news, you’d say Billboard Music news is ‘fair dinkum.’”

He continues, “Another one I have to say is the word ‘ripper’ because I’ve been staying at my mate’s place here the last few days and we’ve been drinking coffee at a place called Little Ripper. And it’s an Australian coffee shop. And the term ‘ripper’ just means, like, a ‘good one,’ like a little, like ‘great one.’

“And the third one is one that I find quite hilarious to explain to Americans. We have these very cute native birds in Australia called budgies, and they’re about they’re about this big, super cute – and our name for a Speedo. Instead of using the term Speedo, we call them budgie smugglers.”

Evans will return to Australia this September on his highly anticipated Life Upside Down tour. He will play at Newcastle Civic Theatre on Saturday 9 September, Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Monday 11 September. He will then make his Sydney Opera House debut on Tuesday 12 September, followed by a second night on Wednesday 13 September.

Evans then heads to Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on Thursday 14 September and Friday 15 September, playing Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall on Sunday 17 September, before taking in back-to-back nights at Perth’s Astor Theatre on Tuesday 19 September and Wednesday 20 September. He will be joined by 2x Golden Guitar winner, James Johnston.

Many of the shows have already sold out, more information can be found here.

His latest EP, Life Upside Down is a project that hits home for Evans and is a poetic timeline of the last year. The project features five tracks, including the previously released Over For You (Live In Melbourne), Over For You and On My Own Again.

“I called it Life Upside Down because this collection of music could only have come from this time, when my life felt exactly that,” Evans said. “To me, these 5 tracks journey through unexpected heartbreak, self-rediscovery, new beginnings and a new found gratitude for the present moment.”
