Emerging country singer-songwriter, Dillon Carmichael married his long-time girlfriend, Shayla Whitson on October 1.

The happy couple tied the knot at Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky in an intimate ceremony in front of friends and family, before taking the reception to Austin City Saloon, where a variety of food trucks served guests options ranging from pizza and tacos to ice cream.

The pair paid homage to their country roots by wearing boots during both the ceremony and reception, and Carmichael matching his belt buckle to Whitson’s late grandpa’s turquoise bolo tie which she held in possession.

Carmichael told PEOPLE, “We just got along so well from day one. We were best friends first. My being on the road kept us from forming a romantic relationship in the beginning, but then we started dating during a stint of my being off the road. We just kept it going after that!”

Carmichael asked Whitson to marry him in February 2021 on their two-year dating anniversary. The pair first met in late 2017 at the Austin City Saloon, when Whitson attended a show Carmichael was playing. They are currently honeymooning in Costa Rica.

Carmichael shared, “We’re on our honeymoon meditating. Zen AF MTFKRS. Leave us alone.”

Carmichael grew up in the small town of Burgin, Kentucky. Inspired by his father, uncles and mother who were all involved in music, he fell in love with country legends like Waylon Jennings and Vern Gosdin alongside the rock and roll he heard on the radio as a kid, and by the time he hit his teens, he was writing his own songs and performing live. After finishing high school, Carmichael relocated to Nashville, where he earned a publishing deal at the tender age of 18.
