The Tasmanian-born country rock-pop singer-songwriter was born into a strong football family. His father coached the state under-16s team and Barnes also played in Southport with Nick Riewoldt, former player and captain of St Kilda Football Club .
In 2017, Barnes performed his chart topping single, The Way We Ride live on AFL 360 on FOX Footy. The performance took place at the Yarra Park outside the MCG on Grand Final Eve.
He wrote on social media, “[I] grew up as a kid with the dream of making it to the AFL so was like a little kid in a candy store... maybe one day we'll get a shot at playing at the 'G' for the Grand Final... now THAT would be a dream come true!”
He shared the performance again in 2019, captioning, “Throwback to this time exactly 2 years ago... combining 2 of my absolute favourite things in Footy and music! Even better getting to perform this song with the two guys I co-wrote it with!”
Light It Up is the title track off Barnes’ latest album. Produced by Melbourne-based production team MSquared, the album features ten new original songs, all co-written by Barnes with Michael Delozrenzis, Michael Paynter, Kaci Brown and Sam Gray.
Barnes says, “Coming up with an album title is always hard. I felt Light It Up really suited the mood of this record and where we’ve taken our live show. It’d be a dream come true if this was featured at a big sporting event – the NRL or AFL, or if we get lucky in the States, the NFL or NASCAR. Lyrically, we came from the perspective that you’ve been knocked down but nothing’s going to stop you. You’ve basically met the reaper and you’ve given him the middle finger… I love it.”
I guess he got his wish.
The 2022 AFL season kicks off Wednesday, March 16!
