Felicity Urquhart and Josh Cunningham are back with a new single ready for all your family playlists, Size Up, with a video Countrytown is proudly premiering today.
The duo’s sweet harmonies are perfect for a song as lovely as Size Up. Starring the adorable 10-year-old Ellie in the video directed by Duncan Toombs, there’s an element of nostalgia in the clip as Toombs utilises a kind of old-school, practical method of installing special effects.
Not focused on CGI or animation, the Size Up video contains a theme of lettering boxes as Urquhart and Cunningham soundtrack pure delight. You can watch the video below.
While there’s a sweetness to Size Up, it also follows Cunningham’s childhood, which involved overcoming the adversity of living in poverty.
“Growing up in a poor family meant that wearing hand-me-down clothes and putting another hole in the belt were just a part of life”, Cunningham reflected in a press release. “But more than that, my siblings and I were encouraged to be resourceful by making do, making things from scratch, or repurposing things to fill a need. The old saying that necessity is the mother of invention certainly rang true in our home.”
For Cunningham, having his guitar as a central element of Size Up couldn’t be more fitting – “It was through my teenage years that I poured myself into the instrument. While other kids had all the latest and greatest forms of entertainment, I was more than satisfied with an old beat-up six-string.”

He continued, “My relationship to the guitar is so deeply rooted in the type of upbringing I had - it’s the perfect instrumental ‘voice’ to tell the story on an even deeper level than the lyric does.”
Urquhart, echoing Cunningham’s outlook, added that singing Size Up with her collaborator was a delight, explaining, “My parents are very practical, hands-on people who also raised me to have the can do, make do mindset that ‘Size Up’ celebrates. It truly feels as though I’m singing my own story too.”
On the video, Urquhart praised Cunningham, Ellie and Toombs, responding that Toombs’ concept for the music video “was both clever and beautifully simple. Its ‘special effects’ were done in a very old school, the do-it-yourself way that was perfectly in keeping with the song’s theme.
“Dunc made a ‘wall of blocks that he projected footage of Josh and I playing the song onto. Throughout the clip, blocks are manually removed, and the camera peers through the wall to catch a glimpse of Ellie on the other side, dancing, playing, and just being a kid. We love working with Duncan; he’s so clever and brings such a great energy to the set.”
