Country pop artist, Abbie Ferris’ latest single, My Kinda Cowboy is a fun time, feel-good piece, with a strong message – that someone’s character is what really matters in life. It’s not the boots or the hat, it’s about the heart beneath, that counts.
Co-written with Nashville-based hitmaker, Phil Barton, along with Brandi Sidoryk and Katie Rox from Canadian country band, Nice Horse, My Kinda Cowboy was produced by Michael Carpenter.
The accompanying music video premieres today exclusively on Countrytown.
Abbie says, "I got back in the saddle and back to my roots when filming the music video for My Kinda Cowboy. I was raised on horseback, and it was important that the vision for this song was authentic and real to me because, ultimately, this is the overall message – it’s not about the kind of hat you wear, but who you really are underneath.
“Growing up, I remember watching all the old western movies with my dad. Playing into that 'John Wayne' cowboy era, I wanted to portray a wild west feel that Jake Davey Studios captured completely. Casa La Vina in the Hunter Valley was a perfect backdrop combined with the horses and dreamy sunset at Jakeiro Equibusiness."

Abbie grew up on a 90-acre farm in Mallala (read more here). Abbie would spend her time exploring the family farm, writing songs, playing her guitar and honing her craft as a singer-songwriter. After being awarded the Market The Music ‘Emerging Artist Scholarship’ in 2017, she made her festival debut at the Groundwater Country Music Festival.
Having cracked into the festival circuit in her debut year, she followed up with performances at Country at the Camp and Australian Music Week later in 2018, and also got her first taste of life on the road touring with Hayley Jensen. In late 2019, Abbie was earmarked to support Golden Guitar winner Kirsty Lee Akers on her ‘Small Town, Big Hearts’ 2020 tour, until COVID-19 killed the tour.
2022 saw Abbie reach new heights, performing at Savannah in the Round, Charters Towers Country Music Festival, and her first-ever main-stage festival performance, at the Groundwater Country Music Festival before headliners Seaforth.
Abbie’s music videos are fast closing in on 900,000 views online. In streaming, her tracks have been added to playlists across the board, most notably Spotify’s ‘Fresh Country’ and ‘Country Chill’ and Apple Music’s ‘Today’s Country’, ‘Aussie Country’ and ‘Country Lovin’ playlists. To date, her singles have clocked up nearly 1.3 million streams combined.
December 2019 saw a brief departure from original music as with the release of a concept EP, The Five – My Teens based on a re-imagining of the five songs that have influenced Abbie’s journey as an artist through her teens. After the success of that release, she turned her focus to her debut 6-track EP, Ready Or Not and relocated to the Central Coast in NSW.
My Kinda Cowboy is her first release for the year and follows 2022’s Hot Summer Nights.
