Some of our faves have chosen grand final weekend to deliver the goods and while a bunch of internationals have scored behinds this week, it’s largely the Aussies storming the goals. Go the Lions!
Taylor Moss - Gravestone
The third drop for the year from Taylor Moss, this one’s the home run (ed: enough sporting analogies please). Gravestone is a rollicking spring winner that cements why Taylor is Australia’s highest streaming female country artist. Always quality and always consistent, Gravestone is a must to drag into your own faves list.
Max McNown - Overdose (Slow Down)
Whatever you want to call it, this one is a cracking tune– on Apple Music and the album cover this one’s Overdose, on Spotify it’s Slow Down. No idea why, but what I DO know is that it’s awesome to see an artist leave such a killer tune as a reward for album release day. Too often lately you have a record that’s pretty much all out there except a few b-sides and with today’s drop of his Leave On A Light album, Max McNown has invited us in for the ride with possibly my favourite on the record. Delve into it this weekend!
Morgan Evans - Ain’t Going Down - Til The Sun Comes Up
Morgan’s back with the deluxe edition of Steel Town and while often these ‘deluxe editions’ are a reminder of why there’s a cutting room floor, this one’s a Garth Brooks covering stomper that we’re super glad found the light of day. When the DJ throws this on, we defy anyone not to be on their feet, spilling their Jack.
Priscilla Block - Maybe Next Time, Honey!
Nashville’s Priscilla Block entered the fray in 2020 when her single "Just About Over You" went viral on TikTok, leading to a major record deal and the release of her acclaimed debut album, Welcome to the Block Party. She’s hardly slowed down with last year’s followup record Things You Didn’t See and this one’s the first taste of her third act. Her trademark hooky chorus and slick production makes this one an undeniable choice.
The Wet Whistles - One More Round
I’ve managed to see these guys a couple of times live this year and wow do they ever know how to have a crowd eating out of the palm of their hands. I defy anyone not to have a great time when the Whistles are in the room. One More Round could well be the honky tonk party hit of the Aussie summer when they hit those harmonies.
Jordan Davis - What Do I Do If You Don’t
It was only a couple of weeks ago we featured Mess, but Jordan Davis is relentless. We’d love to ignore a tune to give someone else a go, but he just keeps rolling out undeniable songs that actually do demand your attention. That’s four in a row and while there’s no album officially announced yet, it’s clearly going to be a ripper when it arrives.
Lewis Love - Man On The Moon
Lewis Love has been on everyone’s lips for the last couple of years, with the industry waiting for the breakthrough. With just one album under his belt, Love has already shared the stage with Zac Brown Band, Waylon Wyatt, Gigi Perez, and Cameron Whitcomb so you know he’s got some serious firepower in his corner. Man On The Moon is a gorgeous ballad, showing off his killer vocal and serious songwriting chops. The future of Australian country is in seriously great hands.
Jet Walker feat. Chillinit - Devil Instead
Jet Walker isn’t to everyone’s taste but with every new tune I am continually impressed with the way he mixes country and hip hop so effortlessly. His Bushboy EP hits in October and if you want to jump outside your comfort zone and reimagine what country could be, approach this one with an open mind.
Jarrad Wrigley - Wear The Hat, Ride The Cowboy
Popping this one just after Jet is a great juxtaposition of where Aussie country is currently at. You couldn’t have a greater contrast, with Toyota Starmaker winner Jarrad Wrigley delivering this stomping country tune sticking strictly to the traditional line. Aussie accent, reference to Bundy: This is a real country boy delivering real country. If this doesn’t make you want to load up the cans in the back of your Land Cruiser and head to the B&S ball, nothing ever will.
Hayley Jensen - Everything All Works Out
We love Hayley Jensen! She closed out this year’s Countrytown Awards and this is her third tune to hit this year. This one is the perfect tune for the times, referencing the crazy world events we’re currently enduring and giving us some optimism and comfort. It’s the perfect way to round out this week’s ten. Whether you’re going for Freo or Brisbane, keep the sentiment in mind.
