Alt country/Americana singer-songwriter, Riley Catherall has dropped his third single, Mother Please off his upcoming debut album, When I Go (set for release on July 23) – and Countrytown has your first listen for this exclusive premiere. It's also our Song of the Day!
Produced by Damian Cafarella at EOR Studios in Melbourne, Riley wrote Mother Please for his own mother while musing on his first taste of independence at age 18, driving away from the old house on dirt roads to his first tastes of freedom in the big wide world.
He says, “When I turned 18 and got my license, I would always be out playing shows and driving around doing whatever it is 18-year-olds do. In turn, I’d always come home late at night and Mum would be waiting up for me to make sure I got home safe. Now that I am in Melbourne, I am no longer coming home every night, so this was a song for my mum to say ‘you don’t need to wait up for me anymore, but please don’t forget about me.’”
The video - shot in an old warehouse in Melbourne – was directed by Tyler Ridgeway from Shoelace Creative.

Riley adds, “I’d always wanted to do a “live” rendition of this song in a sort-of bluegrass outfit in a big open space. So, I got the entire band together and we filmed us playing the track in a run-down warehouse in Carlton. I had my good friend Tyler along to film.”
Mother Please follows the single Vacant Lot, which received airplay on Triple J’s ‘Roots and All’, amassed over 70,000 streams, and spent 4 weeks in The Music Network’s Hot 50 airplay charts. The first taste of the new album Leave Me Out to Dry racked up over 50,000 streams in its first month of release, receiving adds on Spotify playlists including 'Finger Picks' and 'Coast to Coast'. In 2019, he released his breakthrough EP, Venture In Vain.
He recently returned from a co-headline tour with Golden Guitar nominee Gretta Ziller and will be hitting the road in August commencing at the Americana Festival in Wangaratta, in support of his upcoming album release. Riley has previously toured internationally with Lachlan Bryan and the Wildes in the UK, and has also performed at the Maverick Americana Festival, where he was crowned ‘festival favourite’.
