The Weeping Willows brooding new single, Black Crow is our Song of the Day! And Countrytown has your exclusive first look at the animated music video.
2021 CMAA Golden Guitar award winners, The Weeping Willows (partners in life, love, and song, Andrew Wrigglesworth and Laura Coates) are a couple of old souls, steeped in bluegrass tradition and draped in Gothic Americana imagery. They regale their audiences with stories of sunshine and romance, God and The Devil, murder, and decay – and they've delved into darkness once again with brooding new single, Black Crow. It’s our Song of the Day! And Countrytown has your first look at the animated music video for this exclusive premiere.
Shivering with misgiving, Black Crow finds its murderous protagonist inescapably fixed by the penetrating gaze of the titular bird – harbinger of his inevitable fate at the end of a rope. The track was self-penned by the Melbourne duo and recorded, engineered, and mixed by Ryan Freeland at Los Angeles’ storied Stampede Origin Studio.
The Weeping Willows say, “We’ve always been drawn to the more sinister, ‘Gothic’ side of Americana music that harks back to early blues, as well as Bluegrass and ‘mountain music’ traditions. Writing Black Crow allowed us to delve deeper into this sub-genre.”
To accompany the release of Black Crow, The Weeping Willows worked with US animator, filmmaker and educator, Julie Zammarchi to create the special animated music video, that is rendered in suitably austere blacks and greys and thrilling with foreboding.

They say, “It was such a joy and privilege to work with the incredible Julie Zammarchi on the clip, she really brought whole new meaning and life to the song”.
Black Crow will feature on their long-awaited third album, and follow their critically acclaimed Before Darkness Comes A-Callin’ (2016) and Till The North Wind Blows LP (2012). They have been nominated for eight CMAA Golden Guitar awards, 4 CMC Awards and Live Act of the Year (Country) in the National Live Music Awards (NLMAs).
They’re performed at AmericanaFest (USA), Folk Alliance Int. (USA), Maverick Festival (UK), Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Out On The Weekend and the Australian Americana Music Honours, as well as supported Lukas Nelson & POTR, Hayes Carll, Iris DeMent and Willie Watson.
