Train frontman Pat Monahan knew he wanted someone who sounded “different” to join him on the American pop-rock band’s latest single. So, he called country singer, Tenille Townes.

"I really can't believe how pop and cool she sounds on this song as a country singer," Monahan told PEOPLE. "She really did an amazing job."

Townes was equally excited to work with Monahan, confessing she has been a fan of their music since high school. Namely, the lead single from their second studio album, released in 2001.

She shared on social media, “When you sang Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) at your high school music night and 10 years later, you get the invite from Train to sing on their new song! 😱 🤘”

Written with Simon Öbom, Gustav Påsen Gällhagen and Gino the Ghost while also including the additional vocals of multi-platinum rapper and I Know co-writer Bryce Vine, the breezy feel-good summer song showcases an infectious beat, captivating melody and catchy hook.

“So excited to share this with you as our official kickoff to summer 2023,” said Monahan. “Thank you to the incredibly talented Tenille Townes and Bryce Vine for taking this song to the next level. We can’t wait to sing it live with our fans all summer long.”

Townes shared, “From the first time I heard this song, it felt like this vessel of joy that made me start dancing in my Tacoma and making up a harmony part to sing along. I’ve been a fan of the music path of Train for a long time, and it’s an honour to be singing on I Know with them!”

Vine added, “Pat Monahan is a prolific songwriter and feel-good-hitmaker. I’m honoured that he asked me to feature on I Know alongside Train and Tenille Townes. Summer vibes all around.”

The track marks Train’s first new music since the release of their critically acclaimed 11th studio album, AM Gold, in May 2022.

"It's going to be interesting to see how things evolve with I Know," Monahan adds. "I'm not sure how much radio will care. I'm not sure how many playlists it will get on. I'm not very present or, at least, popular on TikTok. I know Bryce is though… Maybe this will attract a new TikTok audience. My [14-year-old] daughter's really good at [TikTok], so I think she and I are going to do some things."

Since their formation in 1994, Train has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100, 12 albums on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and has sold more than 10 million albums and 30 million tracks worldwide. The band’s global hit “Hey, Soul Sister” continues to reach new milestones – it was the #1 best-selling smash and most downloaded single of 2010, achieved RIAA Diamond status in 2021 and now 11x platinum, and in 2022 surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.

Monahan has previously collaborated with Cam, Brandi Carlile, Martina McBride and Ashley Monroe. He has also co-written songs from Sugarland and Taylor Swift.
