Morgan Evans is stepping into the holiday season with his own spin on Paul Kelly’s iconic tearjerker How To Make Gravy.
The original, written by 17 time ARIA award winner Kelly, has earned its place as Australia’s unofficial Christmas anthem for anyone spending the holidays far from home. The song follows Joe, an inmate calling his brother Dan as Christmas approaches, and has become required listening for homesick Aussies everywhere.
Evans isn’t taking the legacy lightly. “Recording How To Make Gravy came with a weight and responsibility. It’s one of the greatest songs ever written,” he said. “It’s not your typical Christmas song, but it’s always hit me right in the guts. Anyone who’s ever spent Christmas away from home knows that feeling. I wanted to make a version in 2025 that honors Paul Kelly’s original, but brings a little country soul, texture and the emotion that comes with that. What a song. Means a lot to release my own version. Have a Merry Christmas!”
The release follows momentum from Beer Back Home, Evans’ first new single in over two years and the lead track from his upcoming sophomore album Steel Town out on March 20, 2026.
Evans is also keeping the good times rolling with his Beer Back Home pop-up shows. They continue next month with a one night takeover at Old Mates Pub in New York City on December 3.
Back home, he’s headlining Meatstock 2026 in Toowoomba and Gippsland, and he’s also locked in for the Howlin’ Country lineup, rounding out what’s shaping up to be a massive year.
