Mackenzie May has shared the long-awaited follow-up to her 2024 single, Little Things. Starting 2025 with a bang, the Central Queensland-based singer has released her second-ever single, Old School Kind Of Love, today.

Although she is only 18 years old, May has established herself in the country music scene with her raw talent, heartfelt lyrics, and sophisticated delivery.

With Old School Kind Of Love, May drew inspiration from classic love stories about relationships that have stood the test of time. Looking closer to home, she realised that there was a classic love story right in front of her.

May explained, “I got inspiration for this song from the frustration of modern-day dating. Boys will casually message on socials, but I don’t want that. I want to see the values that my dad has taught me; I want a guy showing up to meet my parents and bring flowers.

“I dedicate this song to my Nan and Pop. They have been married for almost 66 years, and I love listening to the stories of Pop picking up Nan and taking her to a dance at one of the small local halls.”

May is influenced by storytellers such as Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, and Sierra Ferrell. A unique artist, May has performed at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, winning the 2024 Tamworth Songwriters Association Novice Songwriter of the Year Award.

Last year, May released her debut single, Little Things, which she co-wrote with Sarah Buckley of The Buckleys fame.

“I’m really excited to be releasing music for the first time,” May said at the time. “For me, the creative process of writing, recording and performing is what it’s all about and if people like what I’m doing as much as I am enjoying that process, then that’s really what I’m hoping to achieve.”

While Little Things and Old School Kind Of Love are the first songs we’ve heard from her, May has a lot more to share: she has a treasure trove of unreleased music just waiting to take over the Australian country music scene.
