New Zealand’s award-winning country-pop singer-songwriter, Kaylee Bell performed her original song Keith last night on The Voice Australia to superstar coaches including Keith Urban himself, Jess Mauboy, Guy Sebastian and Rita Ora.
After a thrilling result of having all four chair turns, Bell was fought over by Urban and Mauboy. It had viewers gasping when Mauboy pulled out a ‘block’ card on Urban, meaning he could not have Bell join his team this season. Urban was then silenced by the unmissable ‘blocked’ sign in front of him, as well as screams from the audience.
“You’re kidding!” Keith said. "She literally just sang a song with my name in it, and I’m blocked!”
Jess shrugged, “Yes, she sang a song about you, but I said I was going to fight for her.”

Bell said, “I was extremely thankful for the chance to perform Keith for Keith himself, such a thrill to share this special song with him and even more so with this incredible opportunity to compete on The Voice Australia!”

Written with two friends in Nashville, Bell released Keith in 2019 and has performed it at London’s C2C and New Zealand's Top Paddock Music Festival, among others, but she has recently put out a pop remix as well – which has hit radio. The song is written mostly as an ode to Urban’s music, although it tells the story of a romance experienced by the narrator, with Urban’s song titles interspersed throughout.
According to Country Now, Bell also shared the story behind the song:
“I actually had this crazy idea of writing a song and cramming as many Keith song titles as I could into the song to tell the story. So, I think there’s like 13 titles, but then you keep releasing songs with similar names like We Were and We Were Us and it just keeps growing. I just wanted to write a song that felt like Keith cause Keith has such a feel about his music that I really love and so that was kind of like the aim of the game was to write a song that felt like Keith’s music."
This is not the first time, however, that Bell has met Urban. Bell was invited to perform his #1 single We Were Us with Urban on his Light The Fuse World Tour of Australia in 2014 and again on his 2016 ripCORD World Tour in Wellington. She has opened for Alan Jackson, Lee Kernaghan, The McClymonts, Morgan Evans and The Chicks.
Bell continues her rise in the music world, with over 30 million Spotify streams and holds the reigning title of Most Streamed Female Country Artist for Australasia. Her previous single, Living Free featuring country superstar, Lindsay Ell spent weeks on the Countrytown Music Network Hot 50 Country Airplay Chart, as did Before I Met You featuring The McClymonts.
