Katrina Burgoyne dropped some surprising news on social media – current season 14 Masterchef Australia Fans & Favourites contestant and grand finalist Billie McKay is her cousin!

She wrote on Facebook, “To all my Aussies friends… Not sure if you know or not… but Billie is my cousin! Please cheer her on once again in this seasons MasterChef. We are all so proud of her!”

McKay competed on season 7 of the cooking competition reality series, which sees amateur cooks compete for the coveted tile, which she won over runner-up Georgia Barnes.

Her prizes included $250,000, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, and a monthly column in Australian food magazine, Delicious. Following the final, guest judge Heston Blumenthal offered her a job at his restaurant The Fat Duck, which she accepted.

The MasterChef Australia grand finale starts at 7.30 tonight on Channel 10 and 10 play on demand. It will see the 31-year-old chef and restaurant manager compete against chef and restaurateur, Sarah Todd, who placed ninth in season 6, for the ultimate title.

McKay wrote on Facebook, “Somebody pinch me. I’m feeling so lucky to be here with @sarahtodd ready to go in to the @masterchefau GF tonight. Suitably terrified though… I’ve been here before and I know it’s going to be the hardest challenge yet... but I’m ready to give it my all.”

Raised in regional New South Wales, Burgoyne moved to Nashville with $15,000 and a dream. Restricted by her visa to making an income solely from playing music, she hit the ground running in the most competitive music city in the world. Her previous single, 25 Cents In The Ashtray, sees her keep that promise to herself, which she followed up with the hit, Tennessee.

The two-time Golden Guitar nominee’s impressive career includes an Australian Country Music People’s Choice Award, Australian Songwriters Association Country Song of the Year, and APRA Professional Development Award. Burgoyne previously tasted success with two Top 10 CMC singles Ghost and I Wasn’t Gonna Cry. Her song White Flag also peaked at #7 on CMR, while the album of the same name went Top 10 on the ARIA Country Albums chart in 2011.

She’s also written for many artists, including a track for Lisa McHugh that was the most Shazammed song in all of Ireland. Furthermore, Burgoyne has toured with Kasey Chambers, Shane Nicholson and Catherine Britt and opened for The McClymonts, Troy Cassar-Daley and American country music group, Lonestar. Last year, she teamed up with fellow Australian-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Troy Kemp on the single, Before Summer Starts To Fall.

Her current single, I Wanna Get Away With You, was released in May 2022.

She says, “I Wanna Get Away With You shares the story of falling in love with my husband quicker than expected, after he photobombed me in a honky tonk bar on Broadway in Nashville. We dated for three weeks before I flew home to Australia. Two months later he arrived in my small town to ask me to be his girlfriend. It’s about feeling lucky in love and getting away with steeling someone’s heart.”
