The song Boyfriend talks about not wanting to be a boyfriend any longer, with a twist in the second verse that reveals it's because he wants to level up to husband. Talking to People in 2020, HARDY admitted a conversation with Ryan inspired the song while they were vacation in Clearwater, Florida.

He said, "We were in the pool, picking at each other about something — we're always picking at each other — and I said something like, 'Fine, I don't want to be your boyfriend anymore.’ Then she said something along the lines of, 'It better be because you want to be my husband' with a wink. I looked at her, and instead of turning that into a really sweet moment, I said, 'This is a great song!'"

“We’ve been together for over two years, so now she’s my biggest critic,” he previously said. “She’s not going to hold back, and she’s going to tell me if she loves it. But as always, she thought we nailed it.”

Ryan also shared the news of their engagement on Instagram with a series of photos outside of the Lyric Theater in Oxford, Mississippi. She captioned “WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!!! ?”

“I love you :)”, HARDY commented on her post, which has received over 27,000 likes so far.

Fans, fellow country artists and long-time collaborators shared their congratulatory messages, including Morgan Wallen, The Wolfe Brothers, BRELAND, Dan + Shay’s Dan Smyers, Dierks Bentley, Jordan Davis, Callista Clark, Mitchell Tenpenny, Jake Owen, Jason Aldean and more.

Born Michael Wilson Hardy, the singer-songwriter has written songs for Florida Georgia Line, Chris Lane, Blake Shelton, Thomas Rhett and Wallen among others. As well as his debut, A Rock; in 2019 HARDY released a collaborative mixtape titled Hixtape, Vol. 1, which features artists like Keith Urban, Devin Dawson, Trace Adkins, Dustin Lynch and more. In June 2021, he also featured on the Brantley Gilbert single, The Worst Country Song of All Time.
