Country music singer-songwriters, Ashleigh Dallas and Lachlan Bryan helped launch Bonza, the new and only independent Australian low-cost airline which aims to grow the market by focusing on under-utilised and unserved routes between regional and domestic cities.

Previously, those wanting to fly to Tamworth had to take connecting flights from Sydney or Brisbane. From May 2023, Bonza will operate twice weekly services from Tamworth to Melbourne (Tullamarine) and the Sunshine Coast (Maroochydore).

“BONZA - Welcome to TAMWORTH - The Country Music Capital!” Dallas wrote on social media. “It was quite the exciting day with the inaugural flight direct from Melbourne into Tamworth – with Lachlan Bryan on board to mark the occasion!

“BONZA touches down in our regional centre for the very first time - direct from Melbourne! This is fantastic for our town, connecting regional to city at affordable rates!!”

Bonza added, “Yeee ha! Today we turned the Golden Guitar purple as we got wheels up between Melbourne (Tullamarine) and Tamworth. This new route is bound to strike a chord amongst Melbournians who can explore the wide open spaces of NSW’s New England region as well the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame, the Big Golden Guitar, art galleries and museums. Tamworth locals can take advantage of low-cost flights to Melbourne for their favourite sporting events, theatre shows and food adventures.”

The new Australian low-cost airline, headquartered on the Sunshine Coast, commenced operations on 31 January 2023 after receiving approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority on 12 January. They currently service 27 routes serving 17 destinations in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

Bonza aims to grow the market by focusing on under-utilised and unserved routes between regional and domestic cities through a point-to-point network model, similar to that of Ryanair in Europe.
