A documentary about the legendary British-Australian singer and actress, Olivia Newton-John, is heading to Netflix.

Deadline reports that the untitled project is currently in production, and has some significant talent attached to it. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Nicole Newnham will direct the documentary in partnership with R.J. Cutler’s This Machine, a division of Sony Pictures Television.

Newton-John was born in England and moved to Australia with her family at the age of five. As a teenager, she began her music career and later won a Grammy for the country-inspired tune, Let Me Be There, in 1973. With her leading role as Sandy in the 1978 musical film Grease, Newton-John brought pop-flavoured songs to the screen and beyond.

Some of Newton-John’s most successful songs include Physical, I Honestly Love You, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), Have You Never Been Mellow, Xanadu, A Little More Love, plus her Grease songs, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Summer Nights, and You’re The One That I Want.

Throughout her career, Newton-John sold over 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling artists of all time and the highest-selling female Australian recording artist of all time.

In addition to her music and acting, Newton-John’s fanbase grew due to her bubbly and charming personality and advocacy for breast cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990s and experienced several recurrences throughout her life. Newton-John passed away in 2022 at the age of 73.

According to the documentary description, the unnamed project will explore “the music, life, and magic of beloved pop star and cultural phenom Olivia Newton-John.

“In her own words, through vivid archival and via reminiscences from close friends and collaborators, we’ll follow Olivia’s journey as the world falls madly in love with her and she ascends to the height of fame, only to be confronted by challenges of epic proportions.”

Director Nicole Newnham added, “Olivia always signed her letters ‘love and light’, and that is the shimmering and hopeful legacy she has left us.

“As a young girl, I fell in love with her, listening to Grease on the record player on repeat. But this unique filmmaking journey – deep into the archives and into the amazing community of Olivia’s close friends and family – has revealed a complex and extraordinary woman whose impact on the world is still rippling outwards.”
