Melbourne-based, New Zealand-born country/Americana artist Matt Joe Gow is back with the music video for Between Tonight & Tomorrow (Reprise), premiering exclusively today on Countrytown.

If that song title sounds familiar, it’s because it is – it’s the title track to his 2023 album. As Gow has played the track live across the country, he and his band noticed its popularity, inspiring the singer to take on a reprise version of Between Tonight & Tomorrow.

The reprise version of Between Tonight & Tomorrow is out now on Gow’s new EP, Closer To Tomorrow – the latest version of a fan-favourite is accompanied by four different remix editions of Between Tonight & Tomorrow. But what’s unique about the reprise version?

The music video, directed by Matt Joe Gow, edited by Kerryn Fields, shot by Roberto Nascimento and starring Katya Harrop, puts Gow’s tender vocal and guitar playing front and centre.

Using lo-fi, vintage effects and camera flashes, Gow’s new music video instils a wistful, sad feeling that’s slightly brightened by the use of the mandolin. At the end of the video, Gow and Harrop walk out of frame, hand in hand, with Harrop looking back and smiling at the camera.

It’s a strong contrast to the original song (and video), which contains a rockier feeling and Gow singing in an empty pub.

“The song was tracked live off the floor at Woodshed Studios, Melbourne, with myself on vocals/acoustic guitar and Andy Pollock on mandolin,” Gow revealed in a press release.

Gow explained the ambitious new project with his studio collaborators Chris Elliott and Andrew Pollock, “The remixes are the brainchild of my long-time engineer Chris Elliott. We share a love of trip-hop (Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky), and he felt the style would offer a unique perspective – quite different to the original or the reprise version.

“Also, as a producer, it was nice to have a chance to explore and express different influences and have them work so effectively on this song and in the EP format.”
