Country-pop favourites Mak & Shar are back with a new slice of feel-good charm and this time, they’ve brought a fresh voice along for the ride. The duo has teamed up with CMAA Golden Guitar nominee Andy Penkow for Counting Clouds, a breezy, harmony-filled track landing just in time to soundtrack your mid-year slow-down.

Premiering today, the Counting Clouds video captures the song’s laid-back spirit and warm, rootsy vibe. The video includes sweeping shots of wide-open fields, sparkling lakes, and endless blue skies that’ll have you wishing you could teleport there with a cold drink in hand and nothing on the agenda.

“From the moment we jumped on that first Zoom, we just clicked,” says Mak. “It felt natural, like we’d been working together for years.”

The track was sparked by a mutual friend who sensed creative synergy between the three artists, and that intuition paid off. Blending Mak & Shar’s signature harmonies with Penkow’s smooth country-blues tone, Counting Clouds reminds listeners to pause, breathe, and find joy in the little things.

“For me, this was a song we wanted to write for everyone,” says Mak. “It’s about letting go of stress and appreciating the small stuff, sometimes we all just need to kick back and count clouds.”

Shar adds, “It’s not trying to be dramatic or heavy. It’s light, hopeful, and reminds us to live life on our own terms.”

For Penkow, known for more introspective ballads like Visiting Hours, the project offered a fresh creative direction. “This was such a fun one,” he says. “Working with Mak & Shar was effortless. The whole process was collaborative and just really inspiring.”

Mak agrees, saying Andy played a big role in shaping the track’s sound. “He wasn’t just a guest voice, he helped bring the whole thing to life.”
