Australian alt-country performer Kim McCartin has recently released her debut single, Head Above Water - a long time coming that was worth the wait. The music video exclusively premieres on Countrytown today.
While people might remember McCartin from her 2006 album Two White Horses, Head Above Water serves as a powerful reintroduction to music – for fans and McCartin herself.
The clip finds McCartin strolling on a beach at night before appearing in a house. She sings against the wall as she describes “drowning for days” despite living in a “wonderful world.”
The video is an authentic, devastating depiction of survival and dealing with mental illness, be it anxiety or depression, with McCartin singing about trying to keep her head above water.
Beaches and bathtubs are important sites in the video, with McCartin attempting to find her way home. She looks lost, like she’s trying to remember where she’s going – all against the backdrop of an acoustic guitar.
For the Head Above Water music video, McCartin teamed up with Mik McCartin and Duncan Toombs for filming. The song was recorded and mixed at RagTag Studios by Mik McCartin, who contributed as a producer alongside Kevin Bennett.
