From performing at Nashville’s legendary Bluebird Cafe and Dollywood to taking the stage at Festival Country de Lotbinière in Quebec, Justine Blanchet is proving to the world that country music can embody both intelligence and badassery. With a sound reminiscent of Shania Twain and Maren Morris, the talented singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist views music as a vessel for telling down-to-earth, relatable, and inspirational stories.

Since 2017, Justine independently released 9 singles, which have garnered spins on country radio stations throughout Canada. In addition to accumulating more than 300,000 streams on Spotify, Justine’s official music videos and covers have exploded to over 1 million views on YouTube. Her current single, Hard To Love, is the first track from her debut EP, her first collaboration with Nashville-based Canadian producer Danick Dupelle, which is scheduled to drop later this year.

To get to know her better, we caught up with Justine Blanchet to find out what songs she’s been listening to for this week’s Front Deck Boom Box.

1. Seaforth ft. Sean Kingston – Queen of Daytona Beach

I’ve known about Seaforth for a few years now and I absolutely love their music. It’s unique yet still mainstream. The music definitely has some pop tendencies, but the themes, instruments, and collaborations make these tracks very much qualified as today’s country music. Maybe someday, I will get to see them live, fingers crossed! For now, this one is currently on loop!

2. The Wolfe Brothers – One Beer At A Time

This is another fun party song that has a very cool Irish vibe to it. As a redhead with Scottish roots on my dad’s side, this music is very much part of my regular listening playlists. Beer is obviously at the center of country music and this song really hits the spot. It’s such a great song to sing at the top of my lungs in the shower or even on a run.

3. Keith Urban – Blue Ain’t Your Color

This song holds a special place in my heart. Back when I was making the transition between classical crossover and country music, I had the chance to debut in front of an audience and this song made it on my set. I still remember that I was wearing a blue dress that didn’t fit well during that performance. I was still figuring out my style at the time and I haven’t worn that dress since.

4. Morgan Evans – Love is Real

This one came out the day after I wrote a song with two other Canadian ladies, Jess & Tay, called Is Love Even Real. It was such a funny moment to have Morgan Evans of all people to answer the question in our song the day after it was written. I tell this story every time I sing this song on songwriter’s rounds.

5. Olivia Newton-John – Hopelessly Devoted to You

I’m a huge fan of oldies and vintage songs and have a collection of vinyl albums that I will occasionally play. Most of them are old Elvis records that my mom owned, but it’s a great way to revisit unique and often forgotten gems. For me, this classic is a no-brainer. Everything about the song and her performance of it in Grease are simple yet legendary. I love it.
